Dr. Jenny Sones, research associate in the Davisson 
Lab, has been awarded a Seed Grant from the Cornell Center for Reproductive Genomics (CRG) for her proposal entitled “The role of microRNAs in defective preimplantation signaling observed in the spontaneous BPH/5 mouse model of preeclampsia”. Jenny has received award funding in the amount of $7,000 for her proposed research project. Congratulations Jenny! 4/1/2015

Congratulations to Dr. Ana Valbuena, postdoctoral associate in the Davisson Lab at Weill Cornell on receiving the Inigo Alvarez de Toledo Renal Foundation Award (FRIAT) presented by the Queen of Spain on October 27, 2014 for the paper “Oxysterol-induced soluble endoglin release and its involvement in hypertension” published in the journal Circulation. This study on the pathogenic mechanisms of preeclampsia was led by Dr. Carmelo Bernabeu from Centro de Investigaciones Biologicas, Madrid, Spain, while Ana was a PhD student. 11/10/14
Jenny Sones, graduate student in the Davisson Lab, was selected by the American Heart Association as a recipient of the “Best of AHA Specialty Conferences” award. Jenny’s abstract entitled “BPH/5 Pre-eclamptic Mice Have Increased Uterine Interleukin (IL)-5 and this is Associated with Decidual Natural Killer (dNK) Cell Loss at the Maternal-Fetal Interface Early in Pregnancy” and a second abstract entitled “Cox2 Inhibition During Decidualization Improves Fetal Growth Restriction in the BPH/5 Mouse Model of Preeclampsia” were both recognized among the top 10% of accepted abstracts in the AHA Specialty Conferences. Jenny will re-present both studies at the national AHA Scientific Sessions in Chicago, November 15-19, 2014. Abstracts in this session will be exposed to special international news media and will be covered in the AHA Scientific Sessions news breaks. Congratulations, Jenny! 10/20/14
Jenny Sones, graduate student in the Davisson Lab, received a New Investigator Award at the 2014 American Heart Association Council for High Blood Pressure Research Meeting in San Francisco, CA in September. Jenny received this award for her abstract entitled “BPH/5 Pre-eclamptic Mice Have Increased Uterine Interleukin (IL)-5 and this is Associated with Decidual Natural Killer (dNK) Cell Loss at the Maternal-Fetal Interface Early in Pregnancy”. Jenny Sones, graduate student in the Davisson Lab, was invited to participate as one of three speakers at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Health Equity Seminar Series, “Toward Understanding the Pathobiology of Preeclampsia and the Potential Underlying Mechanism of Vitamin D Involvement” held at the NIH Campus in Bethesda, MD on September 4, 2014. Jenny’s presentation was entitled “Defective Immunoregulatory and Peri-Implantation Events at the Maternal-Fetal Interface in BPH/5, a Mouse Model of Preeclampsia”. 10/20/14
Julie Horwath, an undergraduate in Nutritional Sciences and Fred Dong, an undergraduate in Biological Sciences, both students in the Davisson Lab at Cornell-Ithaca have each been awarded the 2014 David S. Bruce Excellence in Undergraduate Research Awards by the American Physiological Society at the 2014 Experimental Biology Meeting on April 26-30, 2014 in San Diego, CA. This award has been established for outstanding undergraduate students who are presenting their research at the Experimental Biology Meeting and selection of awards is based on the quality of oral presentation of a poster to the David S. Bruce Award Selection Committee. Julie presented her poster entitled “Relief of endoplasmic reticulum stress in the brain subfornical organ rescues high fat diet-induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease“ and Fred presented his poster entitled “Early surge in oxidative stress in the brain subfornical organ during angiotensin-II-induced hypertension". Dr. Colin Young, postdoctoral associate in the Davisso
n Lab at Cornell-Ithaca has been awarded the 2014 Dean Franklin Young Investigator Award by the American Physiological Society. This award recognizes a young investigator who is doing in vivo physiological research and is in the process of establishing an independent laboratory. It comes with a $20,000 grant from Data Sciences International. Colin will be attending the Experimental Biology 2014 Conference in San Diego, CA where he will present his work and receive this award at the annual APS Business Meeting being held on April 29, 2014. Jenny Sones, graduate student in the Davisson Lab at Cornell-Ithaca has been a selected by the Water and Electrolyte Section of the American Physiological Society to give a special oral presentation for her abstract entitled “Interleukin 15 contributes to decidual natural killer cell loss via interferon gamma during early pregnancy in the preeclamptic BPH/5 mouse model” at the Data Blitz Session during the 2014 Experimental Biology Conference in San Diego, CA on April 26, 2014. As a selected presenter, Jenny has also been invited to write a mini-review based on the topic of her presentation, which will be published in the American Journal of Physiology: Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology. Dr. Allyn Mark, visiting faculty in the Davisson 
Lab at Cornell-WCMC is the recipient of the 2013 University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine Distinguished Mentor Award. This award honors faculty members whose distinguished careers have resulted in the mentoring of individuals who have gone on to have their own distinguished careers. Lab at Cornell-Ithaca on October 1, 2013 as a postdoctoral fellow. Christa received her PhD in 2011 in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Davisson and her research group are part of a new 5-year Program Project Grant (P01) in partnership with University of Iowa investigators. The grant focuses on neural pathways and mechanisms in the brain that lead to obesity and obesity-induced hypertension. Each of the studies will examine the effects of two hormones, angiotensin and leptin, and the role they play in the brain to regulate blood pressure and weight. The role of endoplasmic reticulum stress is also a common theme across the projects. There are 3 projects and 3 core facilities. Dr. Davisson is PI of Project #1 entitled, "Brain Angiotensin in Obesity-Induced Hypertension: Role of ER Stress, Oxidant Stress and Leptin", and is Co-Director of Core B: Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology. Dr. Allyn Mark is the Co-I on Project #1. Drs. Colin Young, Heinrich Lob and Ana Valbuena Diez in Dr. Davisson’s group will play key roles in carrying out these studies. Dr. Colin Young, postdoctoral associate in the Davisson Lab was awarded a 2-year American Heart Association (Founder’s Affiliate) Postdoctoral Fellowship starting January 1, 2013 for his proposal “Dissecting the role of brain NFkB in obesity-induced hypertension”. Dr. Robin Davisson was awarded the 2012 Arthur C. Corcoran Memorial Lecture by the American Heart Association’s Council for High Blood Pressure Research. One of the highest honors in the field, the lecture was established in 1977 to honor Arthur C. Corcoran for his contributions to hypertension research. It is presented at the annual meeting of this Council by a distinguished honoree from the field of hypertension. Congratulations, Robin! 10/1/12

Dr. Colin Young from the Davisson-Ithaca lab was awarded first place in the Trainee Highlights in Physiological Genomics Session at the Experimental Biology 2012 meeting (San Diego, CA) for his abstract “Endoplasmic reticulum stress mediates nuclear factor-K-B activation in the subfornical organ during slow-pressor angiotensin-II hypertension.” This award recognizes the most outstanding oral presentation given by a trainee within the Physiological Genomics Featured Topic session. Dr. Heinrich Lob from the Davisson-Ithaca lab was awarded an 
Early Career Research Recognition Award by the American Physiological Society (Neural Control and Autonomic Regulation Section) at the Experimental Biology 2012 meeting (San Diego, CA) for his abstract, "p22phox in the Paraventricular Nucleus of
the Brain Contributes to Diet-induced Obesity." This award is given to senior postdocs or early career faculty whose current and past work contributes significantly to a better understanding of neural control and autonomic regulation of physiological function. Dr. Lob showed in his study that prevention of oxidative stress in an important brain structure that regulates cardiovascular and energy homeostasis blocks weight gain during high fat feeding in mice. This is a novel finding which might lead to further insight in the central nervous system regulation of obesity. Congratulations, Heinrich! 5/8/12

Welcome to Dr. Heinrich Lob, who has joined the Davisson Lab at Cornell-Ithaca as a Research Scientist. Heinrich received his PhD in 2006 from the University of Cologne, Germany. He then joined the lab of Dr. David Harrison at Emory University as a Postdoctoral Fellow. Heinrich specializes in redox biology, T cell activation and hypertension. In the Davisson Lab, Heinrich brings this expertise to work on a variety of projects dealing with the role of oxidative stress, inflammation and ER stress in hypertension. 8/1/11
Congratulations to Ashley Woods, 
who successfully defended her Dissertation entitled, "Examining the role of angiogenic factors and early developmental defects in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia in a mouse model, BPH/5" and participated in Cornell Commencement activities in May, 2011. Welcome to Dr. Jenny Sones who has joined the Davisson Lab at Cornell-Ithaca as a graduate student. Jenny received her DVM in 2008 from Louisiana State University and joined the PhD training program at Cornell University in the summer of 2010. In the Davisson Lab, Jenny will be using her knowledge of equine trophoblast biology and applying it to the BPH/5 model of preeclampsia. 5/26/11
Dr. Colin Young, postdoctoral trainee in the Davisson Cornell-Ithaca Lab won the Michael J. Brody Young Investigator Award at the 2011 Experimental Biology Conference in Washington, DC. This award recognizes a promising young investigator who has made a significant research contribution to the understanding of neural control and autonomic regulation. Colin gave an oral presentation, "Redox-regulated transactivation of activator protein-1 in the paraventricular nucleus mediates renovascular hypertension" at the meeting as part of the NCAR Trainee Featured Topic Session. 5/26/11
Dr. Colin Young, postdoctoral trainee in the Davisson Cornell-Ithaca Lab was awarded a 2011 American Physiological Society Postdoctoral Fellowship in Physiological Genomics. This fellowship has been established in recognition of the fact that many advances in genomics ultimately require a functional understanding in the context of the organism, and special training is needed to conduct this type of research. Colin’s proposal, entitled "Dissecting the role of endoplasmic reticulum stress and NFkB Activation in Neurogenic Hypertension" was one of two fellowships funded nationally. This is a two-year award starting on May 1, 2011. 5/26/11

Davisson Lab alumnus and Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center won the NCAR New Investigator Award at the 2011 Experimental Biology Conference in Washington, DC. This award recognizes an outstanding investigator in the early stages of his career. 5/26/11
Aly Spealman Nadworny, graduate student in the Davisson and Kotlikoff Labs was recently named a "Ro
ck Star of Science" by the American Heart Association and was invited as a special guest to attend the American Heart Association's 11th Annual Go Red for Women Luncheon in New York City. The Go Red for Women campaign centers around the power of women to fight the number 1 and number 4 killers of women in the United States, heart disease and stroke. This year's luncheon was sponsored by Macy's, Merck, and Geoffrey Beene Gives Back, all of which are very interested in the basic research that often leads to cures for major diseases affecting people worldwide. Those in attendance included Hoda Kotb, Mary Tyler Moore, and survivor Pamela Coleman. Go Aly, you Rockstar! 3/9/11
Aly Spealman Nadworny, graduate student in the Davisson and Kotlikoff Labs, has been selected as the next Stanly Stahl Research Fellow by the American Heart Association Founders’ Affiliate. Family, friends and AHA-related physician-scientists have selected Aly’s project, “C-kit+ Cells Exhibit a Unique Redox-Related Molecular Profile that Confers Stemness and Drives Differentiation“, recently funded by the AHA Founders’ Affiliate, for this named award in memory of Mr. Stahl. A luncheon is being planned in January for Aly to present her work to the family and friends of Mr. Stahl. 12/13/10

Dr. Matt Zimmerman, Davisson Lab alumnus and Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center won the prestigious Harry Goldblatt New Investigator Award at the 2010 American Heart Association Council for High Blood Pressure Research Meeting in Washington, DC. This award recognizes a new outstanding independent investigator who has significantly contributed to our understanding of the causes of hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases. Matt was one of three finalists, and competed for the award during the oral presentation sessions. Matt's talk was entitled "Intra-Neuronal Signaling of Angiotensin II: Involvement of Mitochondrial-Localized Nox4 and Mitochondrial Superoxide". 10/21/10

The Davisson Lab 
was pleased to welcome Bob and Helen Appel (Cornell Class of '53 and '55, respectively) for a visit and lab tour on October 1. After meeting with the entire Ithaca-NYC group via the Polycom video system, the Appels made their way down to the "mouse house" for a tour of the small animal surgery suite, radiotelemetry set-up and ultra-high frequency ultrasound equipment. Both life-long learners, Bob and Helen asked great questions, and we all enjoyed sharing our work and ideas with them. 10/21/10
Welcome to Dr. Colin Young who joined the Davisson Lab at Cornell-Ithaca on June 15, 2010 as a postdoctoral associate. Colin recently received his PhD in Physiology from the University of Missouri for his thesis work entitled "A Role for Insulin in the Central Control of Sympathetic Nerve Activity in Humans". In the Davisson Lab, he will utilize functional genomic analysis to unravel molecular mechanisms involved in central neural control of blood pressure. 6/17/10

Aly Spealman Nadworny, graduate student in the Davisson and Kotlikoff Labs, was awarded an American Heart Association 2-Year Predoctoral Fellowship starting July 1, 2010. Her proposal, entitled "C-kit+ cells exhibit a unique redox-related molecular profile that confers stemness and drives differentiation" was one of only 19 applications funded this spring by the AHA Founders Affiliate. Congratulations to Aly Spealman Nadworny (Davisson and Kotlikoff labs), who won Runner-Up for the American Association of Anatomists (AAA) Langman Graduate Student Platform Presentation Award for her Experimental Biology 2010 abstract entitled "C-kit+ cardiac precursor cells exhibit a unique oxidant and antioxidant gene expression profile." The award honors Jan Langman, an outstanding embryologist and educator. Aly presented her work at the EB2010 conference in April in front of the AAA Advisory Committee in competition with other graduate student finalists. Her position as a finalist included a $250 travel award. Aly also gave an oral presentation in the platform session, "Stem Cells". 5/14/10
Dr. Davisson and her research group are now part of a Program Project Grant at Weill Cornell Medical College starting July 1, 2009. The project entitled, "Hypertension and Prostanoid Signaling in the Subfornical Organ of the Brain" focuses focuses on elucidating the processes governing the interaction between key regulatory centers of the brain and the cardiovascular system, with the objective of defining their role in the pathogenesis of hypertension and the ensuing cerebrovascular damage. Dr. Davisson is also the director of the new Radiotelemetry Core. 7/8/09
