The AHDC Virology Laboratory has recently validated a multiplex real time PCR to detect West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV) in a single tube format using multiple sample types from avian and equine species. These viruses have similar clinical presentations, thus, the new test, which tests simultaneously for both viruses, adds diagnostic value to the test. Specimens from species other than avian and equine may be tested, but have not yet been fully validated. All samples that are submitted for either WNV or EEE PCR will now be tested using the new multiplex assay. Details regarding this PCR can be found here.
