Cellular and Molecular Virology

Our virologists study molecular aspects of viral entry, viral evolution and host range in emerging zoonotic viruses that pose epidemic threats. Historically strong basic research into influenza and coronaviruses across animal species (Parrish, Whittaker) focuses on structural studies of viral proteins interacting with their host receptors and antibodies and their evolution across host ranges.  New understanding of the molecular basis of viruses interacting with their host inform the design of novel vaccine platforms and protein targets for vaccination.  Study of the basic biology of viral entry and replication also fuels new anti-viral drug discovery (Schang).  Viral immunologists (Flyak, Caddy) focus on the role of antibodies in prevention and enhancement of viral infection.  Expertise in arboviruses (Kroon Campos) reflects the need to understand changes in microbial threats due to global climate and urban change.
