The American Veterinary Epidemiology Society (AVES) announced 10 new honorary diplomats during the annual meeting of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) in Denver on July 17. At this meeting, AVES also announced their official name change — to the American Veterinary One Health Society (AVOHS), to emphasize an expanded mission to promote One Health nationally and internationally. 

Among 2023’s honorees was Steven A. Osofsky, D.V.M. ’89, the Jay Hyman Professor of Wildlife Health & Health Policy at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, who received an AVOHS honorary diploma. As one of the intellectual catalysts of the One Health as well as Planetary Health concepts, Osofsky’s work around the world continues to focus on the relationships among wildlife health, domestic animal health, and human health and well-being – all as underpinned by environmental stewardship. “I am honored to receive this award, and am of course pleased to see the impact the One Health approach continues to foster globally,” said Osofsky.

The AVOHS aims to advance One Health through educational symposia and the recognition of leaders and students. The honorary diploma is awarded to no more than 10 individuals annually at the AVMA meeting. It recognizes their significant contributions to veterinary epidemiology, public health and One Health. The awards ceremony is sponsored by the Hartz Mountain Corporation.
