The objective of this course is to introduce anatomic pathology residents to the microscopic features of diagnostic and research pathology. Slide and case material given to the pathology residents a week prior will be reviewed by the anatomic pathology residents, guided by the faculty moderator. Pathology residents are expected to present the cases and be prepared to answer relevant questions as they relate to the case material. Emphasis is on pathogenesis, etiology, and pathologic description of the lesions. Invited speakers typically cover areas that are less of an emphasis in the Cornell training program (e.g. industrial and toxicologic pathology).

Schedule

Surgical Pathology Seminar is offered each fall and spring semester for the anatomic pathology residents and is moderated weekly by Cornell faculty and invited speakers.  It meets Tuesdays from 8 to 9 am in the AHDC Conference Room.

PATHOLOGY SENIOR ROTATION EVENING, WEEKEND AND HOLIDAY SCHEDULE, VTMED 5609

The College of Veterinary Medicine and the section of Pathology at Cornell maintain a 24-hour Necropsy Service. Therefore, students are required to be on call on weeknights, weekends and during holidays. Sign-up on the Senior Duty Roster will be completed the first Monday morning of each two week rotation. Home telephone numbers or cellular phone numbers can be entered on this sign-up sheet if you choose and will be kept confidential.

Weekend Duty

Necropsies arriving on the weekend are performed at the discretion of the Pathologist in charge. Saturday morning necropsy duty will begin promptly at 9:00 AM. Weekend call begins at 5PM on Friday. Students that are on call must be accessible by telephone. Report read-outs for Friday, Saturday and Sunday cases will be saved until Monday morning. Please complete your reports as soon after the necropsy as possible so that the case is fresh in your mind.
Necropsies will only be performed on Sundays if there is prior approval by the duty pathologist.
However, large animals that are dropped off on Saturday nights and Sundays, with a history of potential zoonotic disease or a herd health problem, will be necropsied prior to Monday afternoon.

Holiday Duty

Holidays that fall on a Monday: students remain on service; faculty and residents who were on duty over the weekend remain on service; cases are handled on an emergency only basis at the discretion of the Pathologist in charge.

Fourth of July: Cases are handled on an emergency only basis at the discretion of the Pathologist in charge.

Thanksgiving: Thursday and Friday only, cases are handled on an emergency only basis at the discretion of the Pathologist in charge. The service returns to a normal schedule Saturday morning at 9:00AM; regardless of status, no large animal carcass can be left unposted for more than 24 hours.

Winter break (December 25 to January 1): Cases are handled on an emergency only basis at the discretion of the Pathologist in charge; regardless of status, no large animal carcass can be left unposted for more than 24 hours.

Absence from Duty

Attendance at all scheduled activities during this two-week rotation is required for satisfactory completion of the section. If an absence cannot be avoided, the time must be made up through attendance during a free block. Until the time is made up, you will be given an incomplete for the section. A student may miss up to two days of rotation without having to make up the time if they have an excused absence, such as illness, family emergency, or attendance at veterinary medical education seminars. Except for emergencies, prior approval from the Pathologist in charge is required for all excused absences.
