Title: PARTNERSHIP: Agricultural Biosecurity Partnership: Rapid Response Tools for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Disease Preparedness
Project Amount: $800,000
Project Period: August 2024 to July 2028

DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant):

Over the past two decades, outbreaks of avian influenza, especially involving highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), have caused severe economic losses in many countries, including Bangladesh and the United States. The spread of HPAI in the U.S. in 2014-2015 affected 50 million birds and resulted in an estimated loss of $3.3 billion. Currently, the U.S. has been facing another devastating outbreak of HPAI that began in late 2022 and to date has affected 58.7 million birds in 47 states, surpassing the previous record of the 2014-2015 outbreak and standing out as the most significant animal disease event in the history of the U.S. Therefore, there is a critical and urgent need to develop improved countermeasures that will enable effective prevention and control of HPAI in endemic and non-endemic countries. The overall goal of the PARTNERSHIP proposed here is to develop improved and rapidly deployable tools to prevent, contain and diagnose HPAIV. The objectives of the study are: (1) To develop novel rapid response vaccine delivery platforms for effective protection against HPAI in poultry. (2) To develop and validate companion DIVA diagnostics for HPAI.
