Establishment of a Shared Gene Editing Workstation

Principal Investigator: Brian Rudd

Department of Microbiology and Immunology
Sponsor: CVM Equipment Grant Program
Title: Establishment of a Shared Gene Editing Workstation
Project Amount: $30,631
Project Period: June 2024 to May 2025

DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant):

Rapid growth in gene editing has led to a dramatic shift in immunology research. In the past, immunologists moved at a much slower pace, generating mutant mice, focusing on a small number of genes and pathways, and taking months or even years to develop the reagents and resources necessary to answer questions of interest. However, with the advent of CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, it is now possible for a single lab to test hundreds of genes and pathways in a matter of hours, sometimes minutes, at an affordable cost. Currently, Cornell does not have the resources to take advantage of this new approach, which has made it more challenging for investigators to compete with peers at comparable institutions. Therefore, we are requesting funds to establish a modern gene editing workstation, which would allow us to rapidly validate genes of interest, publish high impact papers, and compete for large research grants.
