Actionable Companion Animal Antimicrobial Resistance Dashboards: A Mixed-Methods Approach to Optimize Regional Antibiograms and Meet End Users Expectations

The purpose of this agreement is to develop an actionable antimicrobial resistance (AMR) dashboard for key pathogens of dogs and cats in New York State. Objective 1 will compare antibiograms from two data sources, a commercial and an academic veterinary laboratory, to determine if the datasets can be merged for greater precision and reduced bias. This work will be completed by University of Guelph researchers (subrecipient) who have experience with data from the commercial laboratory. Objective 2 will develop methods for displaying multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotypes and trends. The primary deliverables are an antibiogram dashboard, a prototype MDR dashboard, and documentation of the data quality and dashboard methodology, which will be presented to the data owners at the end of the project. The expected outcomes are the following: (i) engage of AMR experts in the development and use of companion animal AMR dashboards and (ii) prevalence of AMR and MDR for key companion animal pathogens in NY. In the long term, our approach can be used to create a national companion animal AMR dashboard with resolution at the county or regional level. In the long term, we expect our work to lead towards surveillance tools for AMR experts, conveying useful information that they can distill into AMU guidelines and other clinical-decision support tools for veterinarians.
