Watershed Scale Assessment of Emerging Contaminant Impacts to Aquatic Populations and Communities

Principal Investigator: James Casey

Department of Microbiology and Immunology
Sponsor: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS)
Grant Number: F15AC00843
Title: Watershed Scale Assessment of Emerging Contaminant Impacts to Aquatic Populations and Communities
Project Amount: $23,500
Project Period: September 2015 to August 2017

DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant):

This pilot project will explore a novel application of two emerging lines of technical inquiry to investigate the spatial coincidence between environmental stressors and impacts of distribution of aquatic organisms. For our portion of this study we will measure the presence and abundance of fish species using two complementary technologies; quantitative PCR and next generation sequencing. In essence, the two pronged approach presented here maximizes the likelihood of obtaining the most accurate data on species presence and relative abundance that can be used to relate to spatial
coincidence with environmental stressors.
