BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Veterinary students from Cornell University held a free clinic in Binghamton Saturday to provide affordable care to our furry friends.

The university has been running a local clinic in downtown Ithaca for 20 years, and for the past 8 years, the students have brought their clinic all over New York.

While it is nice to be able to help out the community and their furry friends, the students also get something out of the experience.

“Really this is sort of like the most important stuff that the students have to learn how to do,” said Brian Collins, a faculty member of the Cornell University Veterinary School. “They learn how to talk to clients, take histories, they’re also learning basic physical examination skills. They’re also learning about the important preventive healthcare, things that we provide to cats and dogs like vaccinations.”

More than 70 people signed up for appointments before today, and there were dozens of walk-ins as well.

The event took place at the Southern Tier Independence Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
