Help! My Vet Heard Irregular Heartbeats: What Does that Mean?

Presented by Katharyn Mitchell, BVSc, PhD, Dip ACVIM (LAIM)

Dr. Mitchell's presentation will discuss common reasons for horses to have an irregular heart rhythm, otherwise known as an arrhythmia. She will talk about when these arrhythmias should be investigated, safety considerations for horses with arrhythmias, especially during exercise, and what arrhythmia treatments are currently available.

Dr. Katharyn Mitchell graduated from Massey University, New Zealand, in 2003 and since graduating she has been on a journey with equine medicine that has taken her around the world. In addition to her first three years spent as an intern, and nearly 5 years in private mixed practice in Australia, Dr Mitchell completed her residency in large animal internal medicine at Cornell University, USA in 2010. In 2013, Dr Mitchell headed to Switzerland, where she completed a PhD in equine cardiology in 2018.  Currently Dr. Mitchell is an Assistant Professor in Large Animal Internal Medicine at Cornell University in the USA where she is continuing to investigate equine arrhythmias, valvular heart disease and the role of the cardiovascular system in critically ill patients.
