Dr. Gil Ben-Shlomo passed away unexpectedly at the age of 50 on October 21. His passion for veterinary ophthalmology fueled his approach and success in teaching the next generation of veterinarians and veterinary ophthalmologists. His research was both innovative as well as providing a bridge from the bench top to the patient, and has had a significant impact in both the veterinary and human realm in retinal neurodegenerative diseases.

Ben-Shlomo was always known for the generous number of treats he would give patients, his warm and welcoming demeanor, and wonderful smile. In 2019, he came to Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, where he quickly became an integral member of the Section of Ophthalmology. As an ACVO member he was an Editorial Board Member for the journal of Veterinary Ophthalmology and served on committees for various organizations. Gil was also active on the international scene, serving as the current President of the International Society of Veterinary Ophthalmology.
