Euthanasia of unwanted dogs and cats is the leading cause of death in these species in the U.S. today. My research program is aimed at identifying strategies for reducing unnecessary pet euthanasias and enhancing the welfare of companion animals in society using epidemiologic approaches.

The goal of my teaching program is to disseminate information regarding companion animal welfare to veterinary students.
