2012/13 Clinical Investigators' Day
Call for Abstracts

We are pleased to announce that the annual College of Veterinary Medicine  Clinical Investigators’ Day will be held on Monday, March 18, 2013, in Lecture Hall I.   This program offers our interns and residents an opportunity to showcase their research endeavors and provides a forum for trainees to hone both written and oral presentation skills. Presentations will be scored by a panel of judges who will award travel awards to those giving the best presentation.

The Day will include key note speakers, an overview of career opportunities offered in the College of Veterinary Medicine after completion of residency training, a panel discussion of individual research training and career path experiences, and reception at the end of the day.

Presentations will be videotaped for future mentoring support (i.e.  If you would like follow up comments regarding your presentation style and content).

The submission procedure involves a two-staged process.  Your faculty mentor should be apprised early if you plan to participate in the Clinical Investigators’ Day.   In stage 1, individuals will need to submit their abstract by 11:59 pm, Friday, January 11, 2013.  A review and critique will be provided by members of the organizing committee.  Comments will be provided by Friday, January 25, 2013.  Stage 2 involves the submission of revised abstracts. Revised abstracts are due by 11:59 pm, Friday, February 8, 2013.  This process is designed to assist in the presentation of concise abstracts. Abstracts will also be published in a booklet of the day’s events.

Interns and residents from the following units are eligible to submit abstracts:

  • Department of Clinical Sciences
  • Anatomic and Clinical Pathology
  • Ambulatory and Production Medicine
  • Cornell University Hospital for Animals
  • Shelter Medicine
  • Center for Animal Resources and Education

On behalf of the college community organizing this event, we look forward to this special day and welcome your participation.  If you have questions about the guidelines or submission requirements, please contact any one of us.

Elizabeth Buckles, Mary Martin, Joseph Wakshlag.

Guidelines for Preparing Abstracts for the 2012/13 Clinical Investigators' Day

All interns and residents should discuss the preparation of their abstract(s) with their mentors well in advance of the submission deadline. Abstract(s) should include an introduction outlining the background to the work, a brief description of methods, followed by a results and discussion section. Additional information on the preparation of an abstract is provided below and a sample abstract is provided.

All abstracts will be prescreened by the selection committee for inclusion in the program. Studies in their early stages are welcomed; however, they will need to meet the minimum requirements for submission as determined by the selection committee.  For example, complete or partial results of research projects will be accepted for presentation. Case series of greater than 3 cases that highlight novel or unusual presentations will be accepted. Single case reports will not be considered.   Preference will be given to projects which are in more advanced stages.

Individuals are eligible to submit up to 2 abstracts; however, depending on the quality and number of abstracts submitted, the selection committee will have the option of restricting each trainee to 1 presentation.  Abstracts from Residents in the second or third years of their program are strongly encouraged and will be given priority for inclusion in the program.

Each presentation will be limited to a maximum of 15 minutes; 10-12 minutes for presentations and 3-5 minutes for questions.  Oral presentations will take place during Clinical Investigators' Day, Monday, March 18, 2013, in Lecture Hall I.
