A field visit to Maryland showcases two superb but very different research institutions. The National Institutes of Health, located in Bethesda, is the premier biomedical research institution in the nation. The students also were hosted by the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and the US Naval Medical Research Center. Together, they comprise the largest and most diverse biomedical enterprise in the Department of Defense. The NIH, WRAIR and the NMRC offer opportunities for postdoctoral research. Sampling these opportunities and meeting with staff scientists of the three institutions are additional reasons for the visit. Speakers include distinguished scientists, administrators and senior staff.
Students prepare for the visit by conducting library research on the presentation topics. Each presentation consists of a 30 minute overview to the topic followed by 30 minutes of questions and comments.
